It Was Never About The Booze: Course Intro
The Unmanaged Self

It Was Never About The Booze is a 14-day audio course that approaches alcohol dependency from a direction most recovery programmes never go.

Rather than focusing on the drinking itself, the course asks what the drinking was actually for. What it was solving, what pain it was managing, what need it was meeting in the only way that seemed available at the time. The central argument is that alcohol dependency is almost always an intelligent, adaptive response to something real, not a disease that arrived uninvited and not a moral failure.

The course draws from Gabor Maté on addiction as a response to pain, Bruce Alexander's Rat Park research on environment and disconnection, Johann Hari on connection as the opposite of addiction, Viktor Frankl on meaning and the existential vacuum, Carl Jung on the spiritual hunger underneath the craving, and Epictetus on personal agency and the decision that was always yours to make.

Week 1 examines the function. What the drinking was doing, where the wound underneath it came from, how the body stored what the mind could not process, and what the stories most commonly told about alcohol dependency are actually worth.

Week 2 builds from what Week 1 finds. The empty space the drink occupied, the real thirst underneath the craving, the role of genuine connection, the question of personal agency, and finally the person who was always there beneath the behaviour.

It is not an AA course. There are no steps, no disease model, no powerlessness language. It is for anyone who wants to understand their relationship with alcohol honestly, whether they are currently drinking and questioning it, newly sober, years into recovery and still carrying unanswered questions, or someone who loves a person who drinks and wants to understand what they are watching.
